Pearl is the prequel to the instant horror classic Film "X" that was released early in 2022 staring Mia Goth as both Pearl as well as a young woman who is part of a group of people renting a house on Pearl's property in order to make an X-rated film. This film is a prequel set in the early 1900's with Pearl as a young adult. She is already married but her Husband is off to war, and she is stuck on the farm with her mother and her father who is ill not able to care for himself. Pearl on the other hand, dreams of getting off the farm. She learns of a Church dance group that is taking auditions and decides to enter it, in order to finally leave the farm, she has been stuck on. However, tensions rise as her mother is not in favor of her leaving the farm and wants her to stay there and care for her father. While I definitely enjoyed the film it was no "X". I found the pacing to be a bit slow in parts and most of the horror comes towards the end of the film. There is also an exceptionally long monologue that I felt could have been trimmed down by a few minutes. Overall, this is still a good film that I will strongly recommend if you enjoyed the first film.
