I really loved the first Shazam! and I still really like all these characters, but this movie and the storyline in this particular film is just not that much fun, which is a bummer. Helen Mirren really gave her all, though!
On one hand, I’m kind of glad that the superhero movie success formula is showing signs of strain with these low box office grosses, because it’s also a sign that they might not have the same stranglehold on the marketplace forever. But on the other hand, it’s a shame that it probably killed off one of the franchises that had potential to offer something really different in a sea of sameness. There’s a vibe and a warmth to the Shazam! movies that is genuinely special, even if this particular film turned out to be pretty mediocre.
After all, if any superhero movie deserved to bomb (even harder), it was Quantumania, because that movie was straight ass. Good to hear that David F. Sandberg is eager to get back to horror though, since Lights Out is still my favorite film of his!
