A fascinating, thought-provoking, exhaustively researched, highly personal, entertaining essay-style documentary about the history of black representation in film, up through the late ‘70s. It would be great to see a companion piece that tackles the ‘80s onward.
I love these kinds of documentaries, same way I love Los Angeles Plays Itself and Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched. Each has caused me to look at so many things in a different way, not only the movies they dissect. Elvis Mitchell has always been one of my favorite film critics, and wow, he knows more about movies than I feel like I could ever hope to! And thanks for the reminder that I really need to see The Spook Who Sat by the Door!
